Drivers, cyclists and those 'hoofing' it can take advantage of the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry services that serve the Highlands and Islands. The main ferry ports are Oban [Argyll], Uig on the Isle of Skye and Ullapool in the North. Most services run daily and you can find timetables at www.calmac.co.uk or give them a ring on 01859 502444. The main routes are Oban to Barra [Castlebay] / South Uist [Lochboisdale], Uig to North Uist [Lochmaddy] / Harris [Tarbert], Ullapool to Lewis [Stornoway]. Smaller inter Island ferries serve Barra from Eriskay and North Uist to Leverburgh on Harris. These are for foot passengers only. The ferries can be great fun and there is no better way to see the Isles. Leaving Oban or Uig harbour is a great experience and there is so much to see on the way. |
