House buying in Uist

Title: House buying in Uist
Posted by: MARIAN LEES on 23-05-2010

Discussion: I was born in Iochdar but have lived in the borders most of my life. I now find that the call to return home is getting stronger and i can't resist it for much longer although my husband is not quite so sure. What we hope to do is split our time between north and south so i need to find out what the prospect is if we bought a property of renting it out over the winter for say 6 months?
I hope in a couple of years to persuade my other half to move and make it our permanent home so fingers crossed.

Thanks for ur prompt reply Marion. It's good to know that winter lets are sought after and should we buy then it's always an option.
I would however much prefer to move up next week and never have to leave again but at the moment it's not possible due to business commitments. Hope to visit in the next few months to see what's on the market and hopefully get a better idea of when i might come home for good.

People always looking for this length of let but need to be careful re. property law and tenants rights which is why I wouldn't personally do it. The 'shelter scotland' website provides loads of info about what constitutes a tenancy and how difficult it would be to persuade tenants to leave should they prove reluctant to do so.
Another possibility would be to recruit a local friend who will for a cut of profits manage the property for short term weekly lets as October to New Year is always popular with visitors.
