Our road trip...help!!

Title: Our road trip...help!!
Posted by: Fraser Smith on 11-03-2010

Discussion: Hi there, looking for some advice.
After last years club outing to Applecross and Skye,2010 brings us to the Hebrides.
We will be traveling in a group, possibly 10 4x4 trucks!! Looking to arrive at Lochboisdale about 7pm Tuesday( sometime in June ) . We want to get to Stornoway by Wednasday PM. We would be looking for accommodation, somewhere north of Lochboisdale. Not to far north, perhaps a 1hr/2hr drive,?? Just to get us up the road a bit so we can take our time to enjoy the sites the next day. Can anyone suggest a Town/Village/Area or Campsite that would have us ;) ??

Thanks,Fraser

Thanks for all the info,a few of the group had a wee meeting the other day and have decided to stay in a Hotel on the first night. I don't know exactly where right enough!!! Think we're going to try book something this week.

Will keep you posted on where we decide.

Hi Fraser,

Sounds to me like your best best would be the campsite on Benbecula that Eoghan has linked to.

That would take you half way up the Uists and leave you well placed for the final hour's drive to meet with the ferry at Berneray for the short trip across the Sound of Harris to Leverburgh and on to Stornoway (probably about another 3 hour drive from Leverburgh if you are going in convoy at a leisurely pace).

If you were to drive direct to Benbecula it would take you less than an hour, so that means you have plenty time to amble your way there when you disembark at Lochboisdale.

As you'll see by a cursory glance at google maps, there is one 'spinal' road that takes you up the length of the islands. It's not easy to get lost!

I would suggest that if you are considering stopping off at the campsite that you book well in advance. Last year it was full almost for the whole summer.

All the best and enjoy your trip!

Archie

There is only one main road really.if you get a local map it will show you. It's mainly single road with passing places so if theres 10 4x4's it may take you longer than half an hour to get to Benbecula.Have a great time. Its beautiful up there.

Michael, that's a good point.

Here is the link, on the accommodation page too:

Apparently theres a campsite at Liniclate school in Benbecula which is about half an hours drive away from Lochboisdale ferry terminal.

Fraser, Hello there.

I have stared at this post for long enough and will attempt to help.

For a party of that magnitude, I would suggest that you contact the Lochboisdale or Borrodale hotel. Both at Lochboisdale/Dalibugh. 10 4 x 4 vehicles may be a lot for any campsite to accommodate. You might be able to split the party into 2, and make use of both hotels.

I do have to say, if you drove for 2 hours from Lochboisdale, you would be in the drink!, Lochmaddy is more or less an hours drive from the south of South Uist, this means you can more or less stay anywhere. The Dark Island hotel and the Creagorry hotel might also be an option, both large hotels and fairly close to each other. They are located on the Isle of Benbecula.

Either way, you are in driving distance of Lochmaddy, and I suggest you get an OS map or study google maps to get a feel for the lay of the land.

It would be prudent to book now, as there are a lot of music festivals etc, so the sooner the better.

Any other questions, let me know.

Eoghan

I am a wee confuzzled with regards to your plans, as Stornaway is on the Isle of Lewis & Lochboisdale is on South Uist ....

.....Forgot to mention, any local knowlege of what roads to drive, things NOT to miss, would be most appreciated.
