Sea trout fishing in the Western Isles

Title: Sea trout fishing in the Western Isles
Posted by: Stuart Busby on 10-04-2008

Discussion: I am coming for my annual fishing holiday to Grimsay in the first week of June 2008. Having spent the last eight years fishing the remoter lochs for brown trout I would like to find out more about catching a sea trout from a sea pool? Is there anyone local who would be willing to help me with some local knowledge and experience to point me in the right direction? Many thanks. Stuart

Stuart,

Hello there. I have not had the pleasure of catching one of the pool caught sea trout, but they do certainly exist. Behind the Balivanich Airport there are a number of pools at low tide that trap the sea trout in until the returning tide. There are some pretty amazing photos of them in the photo gallery.

I am stumped as to who would be a great authority on this one, I hate to admit it, but if I did know I might not be inclined to tell you as I am not a very nice person really and I get extremely frustrated when people catch fish and I don't. What I can tell you is that they are fished with sand eels on a trace, or using conventional sea trout lures.

It was a local priest that first brought my attention to this method, one of my friends fathers seems to be quite an expert at catching them with a fish at 8lbs!

You could live life by the seat of your pants, go to the D.I. or Creagorry and bring with you an O.S. map and I am sure someone will point you in the right direction. Although I have not heard of anyone specifically fishing for them in Grimsay, It is fair to say that North Uist, Benbecula, Grimsay and South Uist have a wealth of migratory fish in the sea pools, causeway span/inlets and the shores themselves. The pools that are exposed at low tide between Grimsay and North Uist and Benbecula, look prime suspects for sea trout.

You might also want to ask the following gentlemen:

Tight lines,

Eoghan
