Discussion: Hi! On this census my ancesters were listed as living in Machair. Would love to know if there is anymore info I can find on them. The surname is Black.

Thank you!

Hi Lisa,

Can you please ignore my request for the image to decipher.

I found the family & the area is indeed Uachdar.

From looking at your post, the family possibly spread over 2 pages as there is also Mary Black aged 75 yrs in the house who is probably Donald's mother.

Hi Lisa,

I have had a look at the info. I have (not full indexes) but your family are missing.

Is it possible to email me the copy you have so I can decipher which area it is as I'm thinking it is likely Uachdar but without seeing it, I can't be sure.

My email is on this thread.

Hi Anne Marie- this is how I'm related to the family on the census.
Neil Black
John Black 1760-1841
Donald Black 1795-1871
Alexander Black 1838-1929
John J Black 1880-
Ronald Black 1905-1995
Beverly Black 1940- this is my mother

Some of the surnames we married into before 1900 are-Wilson, McDonald, Gillis, Sullivan, Morrison, McNenly, Campbell, Sweeney, O'henley, MacMillan, Gordon, Macpherson, O'brien and MacSween.

Hope this helps! Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Can you tell me if you have a transcription or an actual copy of the 1841 census purchased from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Can you possibly post all names in household please with ages & Head of household's occupation to enable us to help?

Can you give me the Enumeration District No. please or better still..

Class, Piece, Book, Folio and Page

I have a feeling by the surname of Black (more likely a Benbecula connection) the place name may be Uachdar rather than Machair?

Regards,

Anne Marie
