The Isle of South Uist

Halket McDonald

Title: Halket McDonald
Posted by: Larry MacDonald on 29-03-2007

Discussion: I have recently started researching family history and have sourced my GGGrandfather as Halket McDonald who at the time of his Dec 1830 marriage to Jane Baillie, is recorded as being from Skelbo Moor, Dornoch Parish, Sutherland. I have not been able to determine his parents or location of birth. He died in 1837 in West Zorra Upper Canada at age 36 therefore he was born about 1801. His first born was named Angus therefore considering christening patterns, I believe his father was probably named Angus. It was suggested that perhaps I should look at South Uist as there is a name place of Haklett which could prove a link. Has anyone encountered this name during their research? I know its a long shot but you never know. Regards to all.

Larry,

Is it possible that you are looking for Hacklet which is located on the Isle of Benbecula? You may want to point a question to Alasdair [wee guy] Campbell on the site, his parents live roughly in that area and I am sure he could question them for you. Worth a try.

The best person to talk to regarding geneology is Bill Lawson in Harris. He's traced all the islands heritage and has a wealth of information in his head. If you google Bill Lawson Harris you will probably find him.
