Grieve family from Loch Skipport

Title: Grieve family from Loch Skipport
Posted by: Ruaraidh Macilleathain on 24-02-2014

Discussion: I have been trying to find out about the Grieve family from Loch Skipport for some time and have just come across this information on this site. I posted the info below a few years ago without any response. I'd be grateful for any info or if you wanted to have a chat I would be happy to give a ring.

"I live in Lewis.

My great grandmother was a Mary Grieve who lived/was born in Loch Skipport. Her father was David Grieve, shepherd, who was married to a Marion Cameron.

Mary Grieve (23) married Donald Macdonald of Lusta, Waternish, Skye on 14 December 1869 in Drimore and would have moved to Skye.

Any more info would be helpful."

My mother (b. 1924) was called Mary Grieve (Macdonald) after her grandmother.

Regards

Roddy Maclean

Roddy, It may be too late but I have just seen your request for information regarding the Grieve family. I am researching the Ancestry of a friend of mine and his grandmother is Mary Grieve Macdonald of Waternish. She was born in 1877 and is the daughter of Donald Macdonald and Mary Grieve. She went to South Africa when quite young and met and married one Thomas Reynolds Smith (1874 - 1950) He was the son of a Scot who moved to Newcastle in the early 19th century. They returned to the UK and raised a family. I can possibly get more information from my friend if you would like to get in touch.

Hi Ruaraidh,

Do you have any of the birth certs. for the children of David & Mary Cameron?

I have dates for 3 kids. Peggy (Margaret) 1856, Robert 1859 & Marion 1862 all with mother Mary MacLellan.

There seems to be a discrepency with what I have so I would like to compare notes with you :-) ?

Is it possible Mary Cameron was a 1st wife?

According to the 1861 Scottish census, the following lived in Loch Skipport, with him given as Shepherd

David Grieve 40
Mary Grieve 37
Mary Grieve 16
Flora Grieve 14
Johnson Grieve 10
Catherine Grieve 7
Margaret Grieve 4
Robert Grieve 2

David Grieve also appears in 1851, 1871, 1881 and 1891 living in Skipport with family

I got this info from ancestry.com.

From Scotlands People it looks like he died in 1899 aged 77.

But if I were you and wanted to track him back further I would go to http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ and look for his Death record (he was born too early for you to have much hope of finding his birth record). The death record will (should) give you his parents.
