Heathbank was originally built as a mission house/church around the mid 1800's. About 100 years later the building was offering accommodation as a guest house. During the making of the classic film Whisky Galore, in 1948, some of the cast stayed in Heathbank. In 1974 it was opened as a hotel and Northbay enjoyed its first licensed premises since the closing of the old inn decades before.
After an extensive renovation Heathbank Hotel reopened in July 2004, the renovation involving renewing foundations, a new roof, rewiring, re-plumbing and central heating throughout. The most outstanding alteration was the insertion of windows in the bar where the walls are over 3 foot thick, but the transformation now allows you to sit with a coffee or dram and watch fishing boats arriving across the bay at Ardveenish pier, with their day's catch.
The hotel now has five comfortable en-suite bedrooms, a bright welcoming bar, a reception area and a dining room where breakfast and evening meals are served. Meals are also served in the bar where you can also enjoy a sociable evening with the locals who will regale you with stories of the island.
Heathbank is owned and run by Joe and Kathleen Macleod who have been there for over 25 years. They are assisted by a small friendly team who will help make your stay more comfortable. |
