Mary Ann Duncan Stewart

Title: Mary Ann Duncan Stewart
Posted by: Ruth Smith on 11-05-2019

Discussion: I am doing some family research for a friend and she is related to Mary Ann Duncan Stewart (maiden name) who was born in 1926. Mary Ann's mother was Bella (?Isabella) Stewart, father unknown. I have been told that both Mary Ann and her sister Peggy were raised by their grandparents in South Uist. I am interested in finding out the names of their grandparents. I understand the girls were at school there so assume that there could be school records available with the grandparents names attached. I would be extremely grateful for any help in this matter. Thank you.

Hi Ruth,

I don't seem to get emails for replies & have now come across this again while looking for something else i.e. I'm not sure if you're still looking for info?

This is the marriage of Mary Ann's g/parents, available to download on scotlandspeople.gov.uk

STEWART ALEXANDER / DUNCAN MARY ANN 1893
118/2 1 - Howmore

There's an Alexander Stewart on the VRs (Valuation Rolls) at 143 Stelligarry (sic) 1916-1940

I hope this helps.

Hi Anne,

Thank you for your reply. Sorry about the delay in getting back to you and my info being vague but following research, I can now add to it. Mary Ann's mother, Isabella was born in Howmore to Alexander Stewart and Mary Ann Duncan in 1895. I understand that Mary Ann and her sister Peggy were raised by Alexander and Mary Ann Stewart (nee Duncan) in South Uist and they definitely went to School there. I have a photo of them at school there and looking at that, I think Mary Ann might be the oldest. They look to be about 10 or eleven at that time. I was hoping that school records might shed further light on this matter.

I have no idea where either of them were born or whether they had the same father but have been told Mary Ann Duncan Stewart was born in 1926. I have also been told that her father's name was John Campbell from Islay.

Unfortunately I have no further information on Isabella or Peggy.

I hope this info might be of some help and will do my best to try and get some answers to your other questions.

Regards,

Ruth Smith

Hi Ruth,

Unfortunately your info. is vague for anyone to follow.

Is Mary Ann Duncan Stewart the same Mary Duncan Stewart born 1926 Pollockshields?
Was sister Peggy older/younger, when/where born?
Do Mary Ann & Peggy have the same father?

Where was Isabella Stewart, mother of Mary Ann born?
Did Isabella Stewart marry, if so, when/where/who to?
When/where did Isabella Stewart die?

Sometime we need to go round the houses to find the info. we seek.

I'm trying to establish what the surname was of the g/parents on Uist?

A M
