Sealladh na Beinne Mòire Directors Election Candidates

by Storas Uibhist [viewed 2374 times]

Sealladh na Beinne Mòire Directors Election CandidatesThe closing date for Directors nominations for Sealladh na Beinne Mòire, the community company that owns the South Uist Estate, has now passed and five candidates have put themselves forward for election.

There are three vacancies on the Board this year as Sarah MacEachen and Mary Schmoller were required to stand down as part of the rolling process that ensures all the Directors stand down within a maximum period of three years. After many years of service George MacAulay is no longer eligible to be an elected Director and so must also be replaced on the Board.

All Members will shortly receive ballot papers from Electoral Reform Services and we hope for another high participation rate in the election process again this year. The election is open from Monday 26th May and completed ballots must be received by ERS in the pre-paid envelope by lunchtime on Thursday June 12th to be counted. The result of the ballot will be released as soon as it becomes available.

Members can vote for up to three candidates on their ballot form.

The annual elections ensure that the Members are involved with the decision-making process of the community company and can elect their representatives to become Directors of the company, to deliver the aspirations of the community buyout.

The 2014 Candidates List is below:

Candidate statements giving their reason for standing and skills/knowledge that they can contribute to the Board.

Nominee – Duncan Aitken

Proposer – Mary T MacInnes; Seconder – Allan MacDonald

I have decided to stand after being asked by a number of members.

Skills – Director of DA Travel Ltd and Autotec Ltd.

Nominee – Sarah Margaret Anne MacEachen

Proposer – Christine MacQuarrie; Seconder – Donald John MacDonald

I’ve been on the Board of SnBM since the Buyout in 2006 and have lived through the exciting and at times turbulent 8 years since. I’m delighted to see the Loch Carnan wind farm up and running providing a guaranteed income stream and the Lochboisdale development coming to fruition. I am however also aware of the work needing done – in many ways it is still early days.

If voted in, I will continue to work for Eriskay, South Uist and Benbecula to the best of my ability,

Nominee – Hector MacLeod

Proposer – Ronald MacKinnon; Seconder – Alasdair MacEachen

Should I be elected to the Board, I would hope to bring certain skills and experience that would benefit the Board, management and members of SnBM.

From my working life I have extensive experience in commercial management, including financial planning and security, staff relations and managing relationships with other agencies.

On a personal basis, I have lived and worked in the Islands most of my life and at various times been heavily involved in community life through involvement on township committees, as an active crofter, Community Councils and other local community companies.

As a member of the original steering group that led to the formation of SnBM I have remained committed to the success of the community company.

Nominee – Martin Matheson

Proposer – Susan Matheson; Seconder – Marion Matheson

I am keen to see the Community company continue to identify, develop and implement projects which will enhance the economy of the Islands, thus creating additional job opportunities.

As one of the original and founding Directors of the company and an active crofter, I believe I have the knowledge and skills to help the community company to move forward.

Nominee – Mary Theresa Schmoller

Proposer – Gilbert Walker; Seconder – John Campbell

I have now completed two years on the SnBM Board and feel I have made a contribution but so far not able to effect much change. There is tension between what should happen as best practice and what happens in reality which will need to be worked on. I think the way forward will be to blog on a monthly basis to keep everyone informed on the issues that arise – which are often interesting and challenging – and new to everyone.

Lochboisdale and the turbines are a testament to the hard work of the previous Board members.
