Come Dannsa!

by Dannsa [viewed 2163 times]

Come Dannsa!Dannsa will be holding their first ever dance weekend in Uist on 24th-26th August. Friday night will be a Come Dannsa! night in Carinish Hall, North Uist. Entertainment and performances from Dannsa mixed with dances for everyone to enjoy will whet the appetite for a weekend of workshops and cèilidhs in the beautiful southern isles of the Outer Hebrides.

Dannsa always perform and teach with live music - fiddle, small pipes or Gaelic song. Saturday will see workshops in Step dancing, Cèilidh dancing and the Quadrilles in each of three venues, St. Peter’s Daliburgh and Stoneybridge Hall in South Uist, and Cairinish Hall in North Uist, so you can indulge in some island hopping while on a cèilidh workshop crawl! Stoneybridge Hall will play host to an evening cèilidh dance, with music from local band Sounds of Kilpheder, and Dannsa musicians. Workshops continue on the Sunday morning in Stoneybridge Hall, and the weekend will round off with a simple buffet lunch and the chance to unwind on the machair, at the beach or simply admire the hills before heading home.

Members of Dannsa are familiar faces in Uist: they have performed throughout the islands from Berneray to Eriskay, and taught dancing at Ceòlas, as well as leading a mass exodus from the island's dance clubs every November for their fabled 'Strathspé Away' weekends. Their weekend on Uist will give more islanders a chance to sample their wares, and will give a taste of Uist dance culture to visitors from away. The event is part of Highland 2007, and supported by community education in recognition of the importance of keeping gaelic dance traditions alive and thriving. Dance clubs from as far afield as Acharacle are hoping to attend, and enrich the event with samples of their local dance culture - so book your places soon!

There is a special booking rate of £40 for people wanting to attend the whole weekend, or £10 for young people under 18. For more on the details of the weekend and to book workshops, contact Julie Lewis 01870 620376, julieandthomas@yahoo.co.uk julieandthomas@yahoo.co.uk, or write to Tigh na h-Aibhne, 154 Howmore, Isle of South Uist, HS8 5SH.
