Ceòlas - Press release

by Mary Schmoller [viewed 2949 times]

Ceòlas is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year 1996-2006.

To help us celebrate the language and music our tutors again are mostly from Uist, with honourable visitors from other islands and Cape Breton. Rona Lightfoot, Cathy Ann MacPhee and Iain MacKay will offer singing tuition. Calum Beaton, Angus MacKenzie and Ross Ainslie will offer piping tuition and D.J. MacIntyre will provide the tuition for the Youth Piping at Kildonan during the whole week. Stepdance will be led by Alexander MacDonnell from Canada supported by our own Frank McConnell and Sandra Robertson. Fiddle will be led by Kinnon Beaton from Cape Breton and supported by Troy MacGillivray from Cape Breton and Anna Wendy Stevenson, no stranger to the Uists. Piano will be taught by Maybelle Chisholm-MacQueen from Cape Breton who is renowned across the world for her talent.

Gaelic has always been part of Ceòlas but we are expanding the classes on offer to all students as well as offering Gaelic as a main subject. Angus Peter Campbell will explore creativity in the Gaelic language for fluent speakers only during the week and this is an opportunity for our budding Gaelic authors and poets to work alongside a Master of his trade.

Ceòlas has been fortunate that our Artistic Director Iain MacDonald has so many contacts as one of his friends renowned international artist JB Vallely will come to the island for a week to be inspired to create new pictures which will possibly go on show the following year of Highland and Island Culture.

2007 Year of Highland and Island Culture will be strong in our minds in 2006, to ensure we produce quality recordings to be launched in 2007 as part of the celebration of Highland and Island culture.

Ceòlas as usual offers island residents a very special rate for attending for the week, so please contact the office if interested: 01878 700154.

Lectures and community events will be published in the next month’s Am Paipear, so make sure you leave some space in your diary for the 1-7th July.

We look forward to welcoming you to Ceòlas 2006
