| Hi there, I have always had an interest in the islands since 1982 when as a young chappy in the Army, I experienced my 1st firing camp on Benbecula. During my 10 year stint in HMForces, I managed 15 firing camps and so began to become accustomed to being there. All a bit starry-eyed now, and I haven't been there since 1989. |

| My Great grandfathers siblings and his Dad Joseph Black were removed from South Uist in the early 1800's out of hardship. The story goes that they were taken from the Island, thingking they were going to the mainland, but instead the ship and families sailed for Canada. The thought was to move the family, but the Blacks were shipped to Cape Breton in Canada in 1851. Joseph Black and 8 of his children came to Canada at that time. 4 of the kids stayed in Cape Breton and my branch with John Sawyer Black came to Ontario. John Sawyer Blacks family has since spread out in Canada and the USA, but in Jul 2005 we held a John Sawyer Black reunion in Ontario. The third such reunion ( others were in 1967 and 1984) Amazingly, (John Sawyer died in 1931) but at our reunion we had over 260 people show up. Not many of us will have that many people gather in our name, 70 years after we die. I know the Blacks may still be in Scotland, most likely the Benbecula area, but Joseph Black and his wife MAry Wilson, with the 8 kids in tow are no longer there. Thought I's pass on a little about my roots.
