Hi Martin,

Re-Lionaclait- I have a Samuel Murchison residing there as a farmer in the 1841 and the 1851 census (he died in 1855 , having been there for 57 yrs ). His son John was there on the 1861 census, had one of his children Catherine there in 1863, then moved to Glasgow before 1866. Hmmm. They surely must have known each other.

Hello,

I've done a fair bit if research into my dad's side of the family and most are from North and South Uist. I'll start from my father and work back...

Alasdair Kennedy, born 1931 Ardvasar, Skye. Sisters, Mairi, Betty, and Jessie. Mairi and Betty were moved to their aunts in Benbecula after the death of their mother, following complications of birth with my dad.
My dad's mum, was Alice Mary Alexanderina Macdonald Maclean (known as Ida) , born 1901 at 'Rhuabruach' in Griminish. Her parents were Mary Bell Macdonald, and Alexander Maclean, a plasterer. One of nan's sister, was Lizzie, who married Walter Orr, and whose son, Alastair Orr died in WW11 in Egypt, age 23. Mary Bell Macdonald's father was Angus Macdonald, who was the 2nd miller at Lionacleit Mill, Benbecula, in the 1840s.

My Gt Grandad, Alexander Maclean was born in Hougharry, North Uist in 1845, to John Maclean (b1806, Hougharry)) and Janet MacInnes (b 1816, Small Isles)). Alexander married twice, 1st to Catherine MacCuish, of Hougharry, in 1877, and 2nd to my Gt nan, Mary Bell Macdonald, in 1887, in Benbecula.
Coincidentally, Alexander Maclean's brother, Lachlan, married Catherine MacCuish's sister, Marion.

John Maclean's father was Charles Maclean (b1760, Hougharry) and Christy Macdonald (b1765, Hougharry). Most of all my ancestors were crofters, as were most of the islanders.
We still have family in Benbecula, at Viewfield, I believe.

Kind regards
Martin

Sorry, I haven't got any info on your surname, but
f anyone is interested, I have a little info on the Campbells of Lochdar West Side - Linique, and also Murchisons from Lineclate(sp) Benbecula. The family were joined in marriage abt. 1854.

The earliest Campbell I have from Linique is (Dun?) Duncan Campbell who is on the 1841 census as a Schoolmaster, (not born in County)and on the 1851 census as a Society Schoolmaster, born Breadalbane ,Perth.

Earliest Murchison is Samuel 1841 census etc. b.abt. 1775 Duirnish Skye.
