Life on South Uist

Title: Life on South Uist
Posted by: John McInnis on 10-10-2006

Discussion: My great grandfather was born there. He passed away in Parkhill, Ontario around 1862. records indicate he was a member of the Bornish church in Parkhill, named for their homeland. His Name was John MacInnes.

I am very appreciative of this web site, as I feel a bit of a connection. I especially enjoy the photos, depicting life there. What a beautiful place to live.

I am from Nova Scotia and my G grandmother was a Steele from the Steele/MacIntyre line of South Uist. She was from Boisdale in Cape Breton, N.S. I, too feel a connection to South Uist and hope to go there in the next couple years. Until then ,this website is a huge help and inspiration!!!

I am browsing the postings and see that many have the same feelings that I have about South Uist without having been there. I am amazed at seeing the same surnames as in Eastern Kings, PEI and other parts. I watched and listened to a video clip that I accessed through this website - about Ceolas which is held on the island - and got chills as I saw folks dancing and fiddling the same as on PEI. 200 to 250 years later and it's the same.

My hope is to visit next summer - will self cater so that we can spend a lot of time on the island. Many, many thanks to you all and to our you all and to this wonderful website.

John my mother was born on South Uist. She was Mary MacInnes from Lochboisdale. She came to Canada in 1920-21 and settled in the Windsor Ontario area. Her brother and sister, Donald and Marion also came over and settled in Michighan. I too appreciate the web site. Though I have never been to South Uist it gives me the feeling of having been there. I was close this past fall. Got to Scotland but unable to make it to the Islands.

Yes John, I too wish to express my appreciation for this web site. It has been my main source for becoming acquainted with South Uist---the land of my forefathers also.

I look forward to visiting the lands that had been described to me through stories passed down through the generations.
