Old Balivanich School

Title: Old Balivanich School
Posted by: Niall Campbell on 20-06-2010

Discussion: Rumour has it that this fine building in Balivanich is going to be demolished to make way for an access to the proposed new Balivanich School.
This is the oldest Public building in Balivanich and has a fantastic history. It was the centre of learning in Balivanich for many years and it still has many of its original features in tact. It was taken over by the army during the war and used as an Officers Mess. It returned to school use again and many Balivanich 40 something year olds will remember attending it. It sits in an amazing location overlooking the airport beach.
I believe Benbecula Historic Society put in a bid to purchase it and had plans drawn up to convert it into a museum which would house exhibitions, photographs and memorabila connected with the history of Benbecula and for some reason they were turned down.
I think it will be pure madness to destroy this chunk of our history. What do you think?

'Oh my God'!
That is the reaction I got from and ex pupil of the school tonight when I mentioned the demolition. 'If that is what is going on in Balivanich now, no wonder I don't want to go back there, all that that will remain are some ugly disused military buildings and a scattering of ex local authority houses'.

How true! One of the only buildings that has real Uist Charachter in Balivanich and it is going to be demollished to make way for a ROAD! What are the council thinking about?

I heard today that the contractors obtained the keys to inspect the building in prep for the demolition.

Come on Uist folk. Should this be allowed to happen? Can we stop it and support Benbecula Historic Society in their bid to keep it as a public building which will benifit locals and visitors alike?

Very little time but......

I'm in are you?

Are you going to start a campaign to save it? You should post more details on Facebook.
