I think they lived in Staoinebrig c1900, I believe this family have connections to Staoinebrig, Howmore, Ormacleit?. His mother was Anne Beaton, seems she was unmarried? yet her eldest son Neils surname was macAskill? (she also had two twin girls and another daughter all of which died young) I think her brothers were kenneth and donald and a sister Catherine possibly another sister annie?? the grandfathers name was John Beaton son of John Beaton, son of Kenneth Beaton, son of John Beaton (north uist).thankyou any info on these beatons from south uist would be much appreciated, sheena beaton |

Title: BEATONS South Uist |
Discussion: Hi, I am a Beaton from Stoneybridge, South Uist, although I don't live there any more. One of my brothers now lives where we all grew up. Our family of Beatons have been in Stoneybridge for generations - my father was Calum (who passed away only a few months ago), his father was Archie (died about 1969, age 82) and his father was Kenneth. About seven generations back from me my ancestor was also called Kenneth Beaton, or Coinneach Ruadh Maòr (Red haired Kenneth the tax collector) and he lived at the 'Dùn' in Stoneybridge, where a another family of Beatons (alos related to me) live.
If your ancestor was John Beaton then he would likely have been known as Iain or Seonaidh in Gaelic.
Two of my father's sisters were called Catriona (Catherine) and Anna (Anne) and it is likely they would be family names.
I can't be sure but it seems likely that my great grandfather Kenneth Beaton could be one of the Kenneths you have mentioned.
Hope that helps! Will be happy to answer any other queries. |
