Title: An American in Eriskay...sort of
Posted by: Tamara DeMills on 11-08-2009

Discussion: My name is Tamara and I am an American working on a novel (not romance!) in
which I hope to feature several locations in and around South Uist, but particularly, Eriskay.

The idea for the book started over a sweater purchased years ago by a friend (what I believe you would call a jersey) and from there, the idea has so far become about 200 pages of my wild imaginings poured onto the page. But it's all just rubbish until I can add a bit of "local flavor" to the content.

I've been searching the Internet for information about the islands, current and former inhabitants, but as Eriskay is somewhat "off the beaten path," there isn't a wealth of information available. (What's out there seems to consist mostly of the Flora McDonald story and the Whiskey Galore film) but I just know there's more to all of you than that. What do you think about? What do you do for fun? What's life like once all the tourists head for home? How do you make your living? If you could go anywhere else in the world, where would it be? Or, would you choose to stay where you are?

Since I'm not in a position to just chuck everything and head off to Eriskay for an extended informational trip, I was wondering if perhaps anyone out there might provide me with A) information (tourist or otherwise) about the creation of
Eriskay jerseys B) Photographs of Eriskay/Lochboisdale that you'd like to share C)
and general information on life in South Uist.

Many thanks. I look forward to getting to know all of you and creating a really fine tale based upon your unique corner of the world.
