The Isle of South Uist

Introductions and a friendly request.

Title: Introductions and a friendly request.

Discussion: Greetings.

My interest and hope is to be in South Uist and/or Benbecula in 2010. A year after "the homecoming" I know; however my first visit.

My name is John MacDonald. I am a Canadian from Toronto; a descendent of the Lady Cathcart settlers that migrated to the rural municipality of Iona - Saskatchewan (nee North West Territories then)- Canada circa 1884.

---

Request:

I would appreciate it if anyone could direct me to online sources such as Civic registry's and/or regional census.

----

My Great Gradfather was Findlay MacDonald married to Christine (or Christina as may have been common); one of three boys in the family of Duncan, Findlay, Kenneth, and perhaps a sister. Circa 1882 Findlay migrated to Canada, and Kenneth or Duncan to Austrailia (perhaps?) .

I am lead to believe they were crofters on South Uist as opposed to Benbecula proper. Our family was Presbetyrean as opposed to Catholic. There was a mix of "Pres and Cath" and of MacDonald, Mackenzies, Garvies, Crawfords, et al in the 40 odd families that toojk this route.

They primarily founded the RM (rural municipality - synonomous with school district then) of Iona. The RM of St Andrews as well just west where the Catholic church was built.

Many of these crofter settlers are interned at Earlswood Cemetary. I have photos and would be happy to share via email.

Thank you for your patience and help.

For any amatuer geneologists and historians interested in the story of the Lady Cathcart crofters that migrated from South Uist and Benebecula I offer you this article from the Moosomin World Spectator News Paper circa 1974 with references to the early 1900's
