Steel(e) family genealogy

Title: Steel(e) family genealogy
Posted by: Darryn Cole on 05-02-2007

Discussion: I wondered if anybody has any information about the family of Donald Steele & Flora MacIsaac. They were known to have at least 6 children, Kate, Jane, Malcolm, Neil, John & Margaret. The youngest of these was my GG Grandmother. Recent details have revealed that she had 3 children out of wedlock; the last of which was my G Grandfather James Peteranna.
Malcolm married Euphemia Currie and on the death of his father took over the croft.
Any help with the above will be much appreciated. Thanks

Darryn

Hi, I am a direct descendant of John Steele (1786 South Uist - 1849 Mara Township, Ontario Canada). He married Flora McDonald (South Uist 1786 - bef 1849) and had at least three children (John, Alexander and Mary), all of whom immigrated to Canada. I am hoping to understand the family ancestry and tree, and share information.
Of interest to me is if there is a familial connection between John Steele and Anne Steele (1789 South Uist - bef 1852 Mara Township, Ontario, Canada). Also records refer to a Patrick Steele, passing away in transit to Canada, but I cannot find any other references of his name (wondering if it might be misspelled - Rodrick?). As well as any other ancestors?

Does anyone have information on a Dugald Steele born about 1765 in South Uist. He married a Sarah MacLellan also from South Uist. Dugald and his brother John immigrated to Indian River, Prince Edward Island (PEI) Canada in 1792. The MacLellan\'s arrived around 1787. I also found information regarding Flora Steele who married a John MacDonald born 1762 and from South Uist. Both immigrated to Indian River, PEI.

Hi Donald

Thanks for the details of the 1841 Census. Looking through my file this appears to be the same family although I don't have Duncan listed. Of course some of the ages are not exact but as this was the first census taken one can be forgiven for the slight difference.

I did make contact with a woman in Australia re Malcolm's daughter, Jane, but this has come to an abrupt halt. She was going to send me some photos of the family and their headstones as well.

I wonder if there is any more information available on my Steeles of South Uist; anything would be great to get.

Regards

Darryn

Hi to all who have answered my query. Firstly I must apologise to you all for not getting back sooner. I have been too wrapped up in the Peteranna tree as this has grown tenfold with so much information and new contacts from Australia. Likewise my Cole family line has skyrocketed too!

I now have a birth date for Donald (1791) and Flora (1801, Canna). Also an unrelated contact has helped me out with the Steeles. He informed me that Margaret only had 2 children out of wedlock - my grt-grandfather James (1863) and an elder son, Duncan (29 Aug 1862). If anyone here wants to get in touch with me my email address is deegeecole@woosh.co.nz In the meantime I will regularly check this site, but do get in touch as I would like to follow up on the Steeles and I have a lot of info. available if it is of help to you.

Regards
Darryn

Darryn
In the 1841 census of Kilphedar p.1-2 Margaret is listed as Peggy age 7 months, therefore, born in November 1840. An additial brother is also listed, Duncan age 10.
Hope this helps a bit.

Hello Darryn,

There are quite a few members of the Steele and Peteranna family in the members area. I am sure they would be more than happy to help you out.

You may want to ask Henrik Larsson, he is registered on the site and strangely enough has a Steele connection, although he may have to blow his cover in order to help you.

Bill Lawson would be a helpful contact, website: www.billlawson.com

Hello Darryn,
I have been re-searching my family tree for a number of years and have information on the Steeles who came from North Frobost on South Uist in the 1700's.
My Grandmother was Flora Steele from Isle of Canna who's father Neil came from South Uist and later from Barra.
The Donald Steele in your quest may be the Donald Steele of North Frobost born 1730 however I do not have his wif'e name.
Their family I have traced are; Malcolm b 1762 Donald b 1756 Catherine b ??? Roderick b 1766 who married Catherine MacIsaac.
If this is of any help I have more of the history up to the present day.
Regards
Lachlan MacDonald
