the same seven Petrels without the hairy monster.

Seven Petrel sounding rockets prior to firing at the Royal Artillery Range, South Uist. The hairy monster standing beside them is a very much younger me.
I think it was taken in the early 70s. At the time it was a record for the number of such rockets fired in one day.

Below is a random selection from the accommodation section
Treanabhal is the original croft house for number five Milton. It was built in the 1940's and has been recently renovated. It is a beautiful house and sits on a hillock overlooking the township of Milton. Treanabhal sleeps between 4 and 6 people, is well equipped and has beautiful views of the nearby loch.

At checkout, the electricity is calculated through the meter readings and is added onto the bill. A 20% deposit is required once the booking is secured.

Welcome to Hillside where your hosts are Donald & Doreen MacNeil, this comfortable modern house in Glen in Castlebay is less than 5 minutes walk from Castlebay ferry terminal, and local amenities. Hillside has spectacular south facing views over looking Kisimul Castle, and Vatersay and one of the many beautiful beaches to be seen. The patio exclusively for our guests use is a suntrap and is an excellent place to unwind, relax and enjoy the views and breathtaking sunsets. In the summer you may be lucky to hear a corncrake and sometimes they can be seen running across the garden.

We have many years experience of the tourism trade and we will help to organise your day, as well as arrange day trips to Mingulay in the summer, weather permitting, to see the amazing high cliffs and the great variety of sea birds including the puffin.

Enjoy a luxury self-catering break on South Uist in this truly stylish and sophisticated 'earth shelter', built into the hillside on the shore of a beautiful fresh water loch - the ideal location for you and your partner to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

This fully equipped self-catering cottage enjoys the most extraordinary views from its lounge windows - a stream running through the garden, the loch itself, and an island of trees which houses otters, swans and a host of other birds. Beyond is the village of Askernish, but the accommodation is so secluded that few people are aware of its presence.

The cottage is just over a mile from the beach and the famous ‘Tom Morris’ Askernish golf course, 4 miles from the Ferry Terminal at Lochboisdale and 20 miles from the airport at Benbecula.

The design of the house incorporates solatubes which ensure that it is bright and sunny, not dark as a cave, the name by which some people call the house.

<strong>Living Area</strong>
The living area is spacious and airy with an under floor heating system throughout the house which ensures efficient comfort and warmth. A stylish plasma fire is an attractive focal point of the living area which lends a cosy rather intimate feeling to an evening. A Bose Ipod Docking Station, plasma T.V, DVD/Video Player are all available for your entertainment and there is free BT Broadband for use during your stay.

Jo Malone's innovative Scent Surround Cube subtly and continuously scents the house which is a brilliant way to fragrance the hideaway.

<strong>Bathroom</strong>
The bathroom includes beautifully scented White Company and luxury Molton Brown Products for use during your stay. Truly luxurious individual bathrobes are also available

<strong>Kitchen</strong>
Fully equipped open plan kitchen leads out into the living area.

<strong>Bedroom</strong>
Sophisticated lighting can be adjusted to suit the mood. A space to enjoy on your own or together.

<strong>Dining Room</strong>
Dining Room comprises a chaise lounge for relaxing reading.

<strong>Patio</strong>
Suitable for alfresco dining or just watching the sun set.

The Isle of Raasay Hotel was taken over in the summer of 2005 by David, Jane and family. The hotel has been refurbished over the winter and provides comfortable accommodation, home cooked food using local produce - and a walking boot friendly bar.

Situated above Churchton Bay, the hotel has stunning views across the Sound of Raasay to the Cuillin Mountains on the Isle of Skye.

We provide a relaxing base from which to discover the islands rich heritage and explore the unique mix of flora, fauna, archaeology and geology in this peaceful and timeless environment.

Many of the islands walks start, end or pass by the hotel making us ideally situated for accommodation, dining and refreshments!

Whatever the reason for your stay and whatever time of year you visit us we are sure that you will be enchanted by the Isle of Raasay and we will ensure that your stay with us is a memorable one.

The hotel is completely non- smoking and welcomes well behaved dogs.

This brand-new (2009), self-catering residential caravan is fully-equipped and tastefully decorated. It has 2 bedrooms (1 double and 1 twin), lounge area & open-plan kitchen, separate shower and WC. It is double-glazed, and has gas central heating, Freesat TV, telephone, DVD, CD player etc. Outside there is decking all round (with chairs and loungers) and there is parking for 2 cars.

Local facilities include a public house (Am Politician) 10-minutes walk away, serving an extensive menu; a general store and Post Office. Eriskay is linked to South Uist by a causeway. In Lochboisdale (about 15 minutes drive away) there is a variety of shops, including butcher’s, grocery and gift-shop. There is also a doctor’s surgery, dentist’s, filling station, bank and Tourist Information centre. A wide range of activities is available such as salmon and trout fishing, hill walking, bird and deer watching. In all, we think Eriskay is a great base for the discerning visitor, combining tranquility with lots to do and places to visit.

Eriskay can be reached via CalMac ferries from Oban and Castlebay. From Lochboisdale there are also daily ferries to Uig on Skye. Full details of ferry services can be found on the CalMac web site.
